Stude Crusier AM/FM for Avanti?

Hi, Gang. I have a chance to purchase a stock Stude AM/FM radio from a 1966 Crusier. Can someone tell me if this radio will be an exact drop-in into my 1963 Avanti. Can someone comment about any differences between this Crusier AM/FM and an original one for the Avanti? Thanks. John

The radio is the same but it has black knobs.

The lens on Avanti radios where slightly different- had to do with the red instrument lighting I believe, including the above quote on the black buttons & knobs-on all Avanti's they were the off white.

Sounds like it may be a good buy..especially if you can get the lights changed to red.
(Probably at the Studebaker radio guy who advertises in TW).
Who knows (I sure don't) there might be white knobs somewhere.

The knobs are the same off white for '63 and '64 and the same for the AM and AM/FM radios so if you already have an AM just use those knobs. If not SI had them.

The 66 radio has black buttons too, and they are hard to change. The 66 radio is very rare though. I think the chassis might be a bit bigger too, and may not fit the Avanti.

Is it safe to assume that you know that AM/FM radios were not a Studebaker option until the 1964 model year? You are welcome to do what you want, but you did not indicate that you knew that an AM/FM is incorrect for your 1963 Avanti.

Gary, I agree with your sentiments..I'm not going to switch my radio for the same reason.

But, in the poster's defense...at least he was considering an original Studebaker unit and not some digital aftermarket thing that would look totally out of place.

I was considering replacing my AM with a Blaupunkt...with the idea that Stude dealers sold them to fit into Mercedes, so it would certainly would be within the realm of possibilty some well-heeled Avanti buyer would have asked for one to be fitted to his new car.
I did some research and I don't [u]think</u> it wil fit.
But if anyone has information to the contrary, I'd still consider it.

My own take- I like the functionality and sound quality of modern stereos, but love the factory look; for me, I prefer a clean, sharp factory AM for looks with a modern unit installed out of sight.

But if someone needs one, Claude's is a chance to buy from a known seller (See his link).

I bought another console plate and cut it for the radio then I cut a second piece of metal, cut it out for the radio, covered it with woodrained Contac paper then bolted the whole thing together. The Emblem below the radio is a side/door panel emblem held on by Velcro. I put my XM receiver there held by the same Velcro. If I want the more original look I just unscrew the panel, unplug the radio and stick the original back in.
