View Full Version : Avanti crankshaft length

I was told that the avanits had a longer snout on the crankshaft for the pulleys. Is this true? I measured the snout on mine and it was 3.5". I measured three other 289 crankshafts and they were 3", 3.25", & 3.5". Does anyone know?

Jake; all late '62,'63 and '64 Studebaker V-8's have the 3.5 in. crank stub. These are the "full-flow" engines. Avantis are no different.

Funny; I measured some of my stash and they were all 2.825" to the surface of the face where the end play shims go.

Alan; if all of your cranks came from early '62 and older 289 engines, they are the non-full flow short nose ones. I do not know if you and Stude4X4 are measuring the same way. What I do know, to answer the question is that: Jet Thrust Engines show the 1556929 289 crank is the same one as note 16 engine #P90916 and higher '62V-'64V long nose crank, used in full flow blocks in all passenger cars except Avanti, you can check the Avanti book to make sure Avanti is the same as Jet Thrust. I am pretty sure that it is. The short crank 1539111 for note 15 '62V 289 prior to eng. #P90916, shows good all the way back to 1956 Pres. & Sky Hawk and 7E 1962 Trucks.
