I'm not gonna say where I saw this this morning. I don't wanna pick on anyone - and besides - as I've had pointed out to me before, I make grammatical errors too. But I wanna set things straight regarding erroneous variations of a word that gets used a lot here.

Here's the definition of MARQUEE : pronounced MAR-KEE

A large tent, often with open sides, used chiefly for outdoor entertainment.
A rooflike structure, often bearing a signboard, projecting over an entrance, as to a theater or hotel. Also called marquise.

NOW, here's the definition of MARQUE: pronounced MARK

A model or brand of a manufactured product, especially an automobile.

If you're into the restoration of old movie theaters, then you're likely concerned about preserving the Marquee.[:I]

If you're into the restoration of old Studebakers, then you're likely concerned about preserving the Marque.

1957 Transtar 1/2ton
1960 Larkvertible V8
1958 Provincial wagon
1953 Commander coupe
1957 President two door

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

Bob, thank you for posting this piece. I have wanted to do it for a long time as we, the SDC, are the largest single MARQUE club in the country and probably in the world. Many folks have wanted me to use the word MARQUE with a second "e" but as you point out that belongs on a theater and our cars won't fit up there and if they did we could not drive them. So we are a MARQUE club not a Marquee club. Thanks for the explanantion

Yes, this is one of the common errors.

Another is concours and concourse. A concourse is a large open space, like in an airport. Concours is short for concours d'elegance or a show.

I see many errors in posts, but I do try to restrict my corrections to items of fact, particularly related to Studebaker, like the spelling of Broadmoor, Wagonaire and Marshal. An exception to this is when someone uses an error in correcting someone else, like calling AFB an acronym. An acronym is a word made up of parts of other words, as in laser and scuba.

Yes, that is what I stated in another post. I called AFB an abbreviation for aluminum four barrel. Someone else called AFB an acronym, which it is not.

let's just agree on Markie.

Well it is pretty easy to see how our original topic: Marque and Marquee issue happened, most of us, and America are NOT FRENCH, so no one EVER says MARK when they mean a brand name, we say Marquee, not "Marque" >Mark! And who would ever know if you are not Multi-lingual?

So, it would be very easy to misspell it if forced to have to actually write it! [:0]

I firmly believe that the mistakes between marquee and marque and the confusion between concourse and concours has to do with spell check. It usually does not recognize either marqueor concours.

So when an individual is confused by the spelling after spell check has highlighted either as being an incorrect spelling, for our purposes, the wrong spelling is used as the correction. I get almost paranoid each time I use these words.

Thanks, Mr. Biggs and Studegary for the explanations.
