That looks like the stock Studebaker partial flow bracket, but turned upside down so the oil doesn't spill any during a filter change. I've seen that before, but have never done it myself.

This is an interesting car. I was very taken by the side view (except for the graphics....). IMHO, the side view is very clean, maybe because of the deletion of the wheelwell mouldings, the stainless fender cap moulding, the rocker trim, and the 'earmuff' trim piece.

Ive gotta disagree on the headlight treatment.Its not terrible but I think its far from being an improvement.Steve

The slanted lights aren't to my taste but they were common in the late 50s-early 60s period. So I'd guess that's what the GT owner was going for, a retro-custom.
They were seen not only on customs, and the original Lincoln Continental Mark 5, but most famously some Rolls Royce and Bentleys (with bodies by Hooper, IIRC).
In the pre-PC times, they were called "Chinese-eye" in the UK.

Those lights are period correct because they came from that period:

"Customized by legendary period expert Vincent "Beansie" Berbardo, up for sale is a customized 1962 GT Hawk. Berbardo only did 25 cars during the '60's and this was believed to be their last car."

I have serious questions about the seller when he says that he changed the brake "pads" and the "ball joints" on a 1962 Hawk.

The car looks okay to me, except for the "graphics". I think that they spoil the clean lines of the custom and I do not believe that they are period correct.

That's the only customized GT Hawk that I've seen that I actually like.

And I really like it! I've always wondered how one would look without the trim on the door/fender tops. Pretty slick... [8D]

Count me in on the positive side. I like the headlights and the hood,and dechroming is My Style. The graphics no,but they mighta looked good if they were a lot more subtle.

Incredible what the removal of those graphics does for that car. My first reaction was pretty negative ("aw, they ruined it" was what I said to myself), and I thought the Exner-Mopar-style "tipsy" headlights were to blame for my impression; in the altered pic, though, I find I quite like the car!

BTW, one of Stevens' design studies for the 62 Hawk involved "stacked" headlights like this, but in faired vertical pods similar to those on Mercedes of that period (think: 300SL roadster). Would've looked OK, but must have been too extensive, and therefore costly, a change from the existing Hawk fender design...
