Go back to home page of Studebaker Drivers Club, and click onto Tech tips, Specs and Data. You will find your casting numbers.

Roy, there are NO casting numbers to be found there! [:0]

That would be because Casting Numbers are the raised numbers on the passenger side, front of the V-8 blocks, it of course would always be the same until the mold is updated for a major change being part of the mold!

What is listed is SERIAL NUMBERS, a totally different thing.

Studebaker never listed CASTING NUMBERS nor put them in Parts Catalogs because they are not finished part Numbers.

      This was answered here:

Thanks for the info StudeRich. I thought such was the case.
In some instances, I guess it's just necessary to get a crank #
or pull the head and get a bore and stroke, Right?

I disagree , those casting numbers at the back of the block do tell you when the block was cast.
I have 2 V8 engines that have these numbers on them and they are as follows:
          11 4 S which is Nov 4/ 63
          3 12 T which is Mar 12/ 64
These casting numbers do not tell you what size the engine is though . Both of these numbers I have given are from 289,but theycould of been the same for a 259 as well . When the blocks were cast they wouldn't have know what size the engine was going to end up I figure, thats where the serial number would come in .
They started using these casting numbers in 1947 with the letter " A " and continued right through to 1964 using the letter "T" for 1964
They bypassed 2 letters "I" and "L" probably because looked too much like a 1 and a 7. Using this format it is very easy to tell the exact date your engine was cast.

Those date codes are nice to know Champ, thanks for posting the coding, BUT they are not "CASTING NUMBERS" there actually IS a casting NUMBER at the front, these are just "date codes"! So I would have to disagree with the following: [:0]

And yes they DID have a removeable "plug" in the mold so the date code could actually be CHANGED each day.

Mine has a G,it is a 53, and it has no engine #
only a cloverleaf. Is this unusual?

Those date codes only tell you when the block was cast, they have no relationship to when the engine was built. I talked to an old Studebaker employee who drilled the oil passege ways on the sixes. He told me the blocks were cast, then sent through a vibrator to break up and shake out the sand cores, then they were put on a rack in the outside to weather. Sometimes they weathered for a few months, sometimes they were weathered for a couple of years, just depending on when they needed blocks to machine. This was to let the internal stresses equalize, and to have stockpile of blocks available when they wanted them.

I have no idea what the "G" is about, it depends where you found it!
We has already determined that this is a heavy duty replacement engine because of the cloverleaf and no Serial Number (Blank, you said). If anyone cared, the Dealer or Garage installing it could have stamped the old number on it, or in some states like Calif. and most I guess, prior to 1955 that registered the car by it's Engine Number, they would assign a State DMV Issued number to stamp it with and re-record the Title.

So what else is there to know, and does it matter? NO, it's a 232 Truck engine that originally came with 3 H.D. Tri-Metal center main bearings, and H.D. Rod Bearings if they are still there, that's it.

Both of these 289's I have stated the date codes here have serial numbers that date them about 3 weeks after the date codes.

I'm guessing you are referring to the date code. The 'G' tells us the block was cast in 1953. Numbers in front of the G would indicate month, date.
                          Now isn't that valuable information?
