  • Need New Master Cyl. for 1966 Commander

Just tok my Studebaker Commander six out of storage, drained the gas tank, put in fresh gas and its started easily. Tried to drive it and when applying the brakes one of the wheels was locking up. I suspect that the master cylinder is bad. Does anyone know where I can get a NOS Master Cylinder?

Dennis: If only one wheel is locking up, it is not the master cylinder. It is the wheel cylinder or other parts on that wheel, perhaps a failed grease seal that has soaked the linings while the car was in storage. BP

Perhaps the flexible line has collapsed, acting as a one way valve. New, not necessarily NOS master cylinders are available from almost all the Stude vendors.

Is it a Dual Master Cylinder with no Power Brakes and Drum Brakes?

Before you do anything, convert the MC to a dual MC using the Turner Kit
          You will not regret it

Being a 66, Bill, it probably already is a dual MC. That is, if it's a drum brake car.

And Bill the 61-66 Lark type cars have the master cylinder on the firewall. Turners kit is a mount for under the floor board type master cylinders.

You did not indicate whether or not you had a hard or soft pedal. My brake pedal was hard as a brick, and I had wheel lockup, sometimes on the left front, other times on the right front which made for some scary braking.[:0]The culprit was a clogged rear brake line. That in itself solved the problem, but I went with a Turner front disc brake system for safety's sake.

The 66 Commander uses a dual master cylinder. That's the way all of them came. I will remove the rear brake drum this week. The hoses should be fairly new so we hope to see what is causing the brake on that wheel to grab. Its a strange problem.
