I have decided that for my fall/winter project I want to remove the chrome,er,stainless trim on the sides of my '65 Daytona.I also want to remove the retaining clips holding it on.I have heard a lot of wives' tales and barroom BS concerning this, but I want to do it right.I am starting from scratch(no pun intended)and I want to do this correctly,as the stainless is in good condition,other then being duller than cat litter.I am not removing the windshield or backlite trim (leaving that up to the pros);I just want to do the body side trim.Any and all instructions/guidance/tech tips will be greatly appreciated.Thanks a bunch!!!

Depending on who's been looking after your car for the last umpteen years.. it's not safe assuming the clips and clamps are original. The only way you can tell is by looking on the inside of the fenders and doors and quarters to see what clips are used in each instance.
Having said that- most of your clips SHOULD be wire spring-clips that are inserted through holes in the body panels. The best way to remove these is to use a (short) slotted screwdriver to PUSH the ends of the clip together from the INSIDE of the panel.... while someone gently pulls the trim away from the body.
IF you simply cannot reach the clip the from the inside-
Put a length of duct-tape on either side of the trim moulding. Insert a 3" putty knife (with duct-taped blade)- under the moulding. Slip another putty knife under the moulding (on top the 1st putty knife)- and use the 2nd putty knife to pry the moulding off. Keep the putty knife as CLOSE to the clip as possible.

Excellent, RAY-LIN. And, as those clips are always rusty, spray some WD-40 or similar in there. Not to break it free--just to help things move more easily. Less force required on the trim side.

Buy a trim removal tool!
This will be the best money you ever spent, as you can remove trim and not mess up the paint, fender and/or your knuckles. You can pick one up at any Sears or any decent tool store. If needed you can use the plastic interior ones that Harbor Freight sells.

Additionally to Studeman's procedure with the putty knives (thin flexible putty knives), slip a flat blade screwdriver between the putty knives to force the clip up and out. Slip a piece of paper between the trim and painted surface before slipping the 1st putty knife under the trim, if you want to avoid possibility of marking the paint. Take your time! If unusual force seems to be required, investigate.

Okay, I have finally started on this job.I removed the fender and quarter panel stainless without incident. I even managed to salvage a few of the old clips.I now want to remove the stainless on the doors.Obviously there are two pieces here, one long piece and the small one under the door handle.My question is, can I remove the longer piece without having to take off or loosen the door handles?The stainless under the door handles can stay there for the time being.I'm going along pretty well at this point and don't want to [xx(]up anything.Thanks again!

Just inside the door jamb you should see a slotted-head screw with an external star washer under the head. All you need to do is remove that screw, and the handle will come off.
After the screw is out, knock the handle towards the FRONT of the car with the heel of your hand. It won't take much- just enough to jolt it loose, so hold it with your other hand so it doesn't just fall off.. Then it will come right out of the door.
You can re-install the handles with the trim out of the way...
