  • Let's play "Spot the Stude!"

I was perusing the thread of vintage color shots of US cities on the Skyscrapercity forums (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=142692) and came across this pic of Salt Lake City, 1958:

It's like an automotive version of "Where's Waldo?"

There's a '37 Dictator sedan parked in front of the Woolworth's.
The owner is in eating the 'Blue Plate Special'.
Her dog is waiting patiently for some of the extra chips she always brings out.
        (How's that?)

I find it amazing that there were three lanes plus a turn lane way back then. I know SLC was a city - but how big was it in the mid-50s?

It looks like a '57 Ford is turning left in front of the '51 Stude!!!Crazy drivers even then
BTW, I collect old postcards, I enjoy picking up old street scene shots.

Actually I think it is a '52 Champion Deluxe 4 Dr.

It is hard to tell, but is that car stopped for the Red light to the left of the Stude. about a '54 Dodge with a Continental kit, could be a Ford, but definitely does not look GM. But I did not cheat and save and enlarge the pic!

Dunno bout legalilities in the State of Utah but in Illinois that is legal, and it does make a certain amount of sense. A driver can pull out into the cross street to ready themselves to make the turn when the light is green. If the light turns red the driver may continue to make the turn to complete the maneuver. If they don't the 51 will not be able to go anywhere as the driver is stuck in the middle of the street [)]. I use this little diddy in excessively busy traffic where there is no way I'll be able to safely cross the opposing lanes. Now if the driver was racing to the light and it changed with them not slowing down like some of the yoyos around here pull(particularly in mass), that would be another story....
