  • 50 Champ Turn Signals

I've finally started taking my 50 Champ apart to give it a makeover. It appears that it doesn't have turn signal lights. Was this an option back in 50?After looking through the catalog,it appears they at one time made a kit P/N AC 1881,I assume to add on and give it turn signals. Is that what the kit is for and are there any out there for sale? Thanks for any help.

Turn signals were an option in those years. The 1950 models originally had the wires for turn signals and fog lights built into the wiring harness. In about the middle of April 1950, the harness was changed to eliminate these wires. Why? Just a guess, but possibly for (Korean) wartime material conservation. To tell which design you have, find the terminal block mounted on the engine firewall near the steering post. If there are only 3 wires there, your car has the new harness. The correct turn signal kit for that car is AC-2100 (AC-2081 if your car has automatic transmission). If you buy an AC-1881 kit, it does not come with wires, so you also need an adaptation kit, AC-150, which is the missing wires. If you had to, you could probably make your own wires.

Thanks a lot Dwain for the info. The car has the 3 wire terminal block just off to the driver's side of the steering shaft so I guess it has the new harness.I guess then I need the AC 2100 kit.Is there a vendor out there who would have that or am I dreaming.Once again,THANKS for help

All you can do is start inquiring around. I have a feeling it might take a while to find either kit. Alternatives are to find a used switch and make up your own wires, or installing a SigStat style switch.

Yes turn signals were an option in 1950. I bought a 1950 Champion in the spring of 1972 and a few months later I was visiting a friend in Wisconsin. He took me to an old Studebaker dealer and I bought a set of NOS turn signals and a horn button.

Were they installed by the factory or the dealer? Mine has them but they weren't listed on the order sheet with the other options. Any idea why?
