  • WTB a dual intake and exaust for a 50 commander

Does anyone know where I could find a dual intake for my 50 commander?

I have heard there was/is a dual exhaust manifold for the big six as well.

    Thanks

I would hate to have to prove it right now, but I am sure that I have seen pictures of a Commander dual carb intake. I don't think anyone is reproducing them now, but a goggle search might prove me wrong. A few years ago there was an article about a member who was modifying a Chevy six manifold for a big six, but it required a lot of cutting and careful welding. I never heard about the outcome.

There are a few vintage ones out there...but very few. No repops have been made.

This was not really a "hot rod" motor, and since Studebaker brought out their V8 in '51, there was not a big need even "back in the day" for speed parts for it.

I've seen one or two multi carb intakes and aluminum heads for the Commander 6...ever.

Keep hunting. You might get lucky. And it's sooo satisfying to find that super rare part [^] [8D]. Be prepared to pay the price, however.

I knew I should have bid higher on the one I saw for sale on ebay. Last I saw one a Weiland went for $330.
Does the smaller 6 and the big 6 have the same size intake fittings?

Champion Six speed parts won't fit the bigger motor.

I think this is what you're looking for - Weiand 2x aluminum intake for the Dictator/Commander Six:

Stay vigilant in your searches for "Weiand". They have no casting numbers or stampings to indicate their application, so you may find one even if the seller doesn't know what it fits. Good Luck!

Dave Thiebalt had a split exhaust and a nice dual carb intake for a Champ 6 at his table at Lancaster yesterday....

Champion Six won't fit the bigger Commander Six.

Yes, there were some made for the Commander Six, and I have seen them personally with my eyes. However, every one I have ever seen has been highly coveted by it's owner.

If your a decent fabricator, I'd suggest fabbing your own. You'll have to do that anyways for headers if you find a dual carb intake. Cathcart homemakes them out of old manifolds and muffer pipe for champion sixes!

Making something similiar to what Rick Phillips did for his Champion wouldn't be too hard and it would certainly be different.

kpcoupe on this forum could give you info on how to contact Rick Phillips if you still want to contact him.

Go to vintagespeed.com and scroll down to online catalogue. At category click on intakes inline 6 and straight eight. Dual setup for Studes 39-52 @ $202.00. If this won't fit the Commander check out their dual "Y" intakes that bolt to where the original carb bolted on. You can see pictures and prices are listed. Joe

Be careful with vintage speed. Charlie Price took over two years to build dual holley single barrels on an offenhauser manifold for me. I had to call repeatedly over that time to get the manifold and I'm still waiting for my air cleaners, it's been 3 plus years. Try Bill Cathcart, or google studebaker dual intake manifolds. A place in California called Phinean (spelling?) racing, I think they had the big six manifolds. Paul

The name of the company in California is actually Phethean racing, and they are at www.offyparts.com.
