  • Should We Paint This? (Part Two)

Okay, by now you might have realized that one of us is a tad bit obsessive-compulsive at a drop of the hat. Don't know if it was the week away from the truck or the gradually cooling temperatures ouside, but a certin someone came home with the great idea to finally clean the underside of the hood. This time, we thought we would ask if there is a preferred or "easier" way before we just jump in with a wire wheel and go to town. Also, what is the purpose of the undercoating (or whatever the rubbery coating underneath the hood should be called) anyway? After we remove it, should we put a new coating back on, or is paint fine? We removed the same coating from the inside of the cab (a two week project) and were hoping for a easier solution. (The obvious first choice would be to take it to a professional; however, our amateur work just happens to be free...)

I would have an automotive paint store put the proper color in 2 or 3 spray cans. Then spray the area that is lightly rusted with a rust converter primer. Usually you wait 24 hours & then top coat with the color of the truck. Your cab looks really good & with a nice repaint in there, will look brand new again. Take your time in masking the backglass with a fineline masking tape on the edges first.

I might be mistaken, but I believe the 'undercoating' under the hood and inside the cab was largely to cut down on noise rather than protect from rust.
