I just rebuilt the carb for my '62 Hawk GT 289. When I step on the accelerator, it gasps for air and almost stalls. When rebuilding the carb, I changed the pump rod adjustment from probably 1" or more (I didn't measure it) to what the rebuild instructions said, 5/8" Now I'm wondering if that is why the engine doesn't respond to the accelerator. Suggestions, please.
Previously I had been getting 9 mpg around town. I'm trying to improve that. I also found the idle screws out by 2 1/4 turns and the shop manual suggests about 1 1/4 turn. But should that affect gas mileage around town, while not idling?
I also read another thread that advancing the timing to just before pinging would increase responsivness. True?
