Looking back - old TW ads

Pulled out the Sept. '73 Turning Wheels this morning. Skimmed thru it and found reprints of some Car Mag reviews of the all new '62 GT Hawk.
Motor Trend's tech editor said: "Twisty mountain roads like these offer no obstacle to the Hawk's near-perfect handling characteristics."

One Frank Tolbert wrote in his auto column in the Dallas Morning News: "I want to say without prolouge and without stuttering that the Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk is the most satisfactory car I've driven this season."

Kind of amazing praise for what was really an 11-year old car at the time!

I reside in the Town of Wappinger with a Wappingers Falls address. The name Gerald Miracle is familiar to me. I think he may have owned a 1954 Champion Starliner with factory leather seats, that I am familiar with, or this could have been another '54.

I did not reside in Wappinger until 1991. I did live in the area (within ten miles). His name is familar to me, but I can't place the guy. He has probably been out of Studebakers for the past 30 years. There is a Gerald Miracle still listed in the telephone book, in Pleasant Valley, not Wappingers Falls (both Dutchess County). Maybe I should call him. A local Ford-Mercury-Lincoln dealership is Miracle. I wonder if it is him. I never made the connection before. The dealership started in Pleasant Valley and is now in Poughkeepsie.

I go by the rule that a nicely restored car will cost about as much as a new car. A new car could be had for about $3000 in the early 70's. A new car today cost $20,000 or so. Thats about what a nice restoration goes for today. To boot, I was living quite well on $8000 a year in 1973.

63 SL Wagonaire for $1500, 55 Speedster $450 35 years ago; we can guess what they're worth now. Whatever rate of appreciation that was, do you think that rate will continue going forward (for Studes), or will future appreciation be a much slower rate?

I'm inclined to think slower.

Those kind of prices make me think of my M-series pickup which I bought in 1973 for $125.00. I saw one at the Springfield swap Saturday in similar condition with an asking price of $7,500.00. My how times change.

Leonard-lost my first restored convertible in that same manner. Didn't have an ad, just an appearance at a zone meet. Soon after it was gone to somewhere in Missouri, I think.
