  • Howling Speedometer

A while back a howling noise started in my '53 Land Cruiser which was taken care of by greasing the cable. A few months later a similar noise started. It stopped after disconnecting the cable from the speedometer. The experts tell me it is the speedometer itself and the only thing to do is take it out and have it rebuilt. Are there any other suggestions out there? Is there a way to lubricate the speedometer? I'm open for suggestions.

Don, I can't say conclusively that it's an easy fix, BUT...

I just happen to have a 53 speedo head out in the garage. Here's a photo of the oiling point at the back of this unit. A couple of drops of 3-in-1 or something equivelent and I'd bet your squealing goes away!

Yeah and I thought this thing (Canon Powershot A720 IS) had the technology to make up for such. Oh well - maybe cause it was on macro.[xx(]
Still, you can see where the oiling point is. I've had several howling, screeching speedos that have been cured with a drop of oil.

Yup, that little bottle of 3 in 1 (SAE 20) works wonders.

bams, alot of the photo-editing software offers this ability. Truth told, I used Microsoft Paint, which is in the accessories section of your Windows operating section. I'm sure the fancier softwares like Photo-Shop and others have this capability, but I'm used to Paint AND it's simple enough that I don't feel intimidated by the complexity.[:I]

Cold weather came and my speedometer was howling like crazy. Never knew about the oil hole till I came here. Found a can of 3 in 1 oil and it works.
