View Full Version : 1961 Lark Steering Box Adjustment

1961 Lark with Type "S" steering box. There is several inches of free play when turning the steering wheel back and forth. The play is mostly in the box. I've checked/repaired/replaced other steering components such as the pivot pin assembly, etc. The adjustment procedures in the service manual say to remove the drag link, remove the steering wheel, check the shaft nut with an inch-pound torque wrench, etc. Is there some kind of "mechanics" quick and dirty procedure to remove some of the free play without going through all that?

You can center the wheel and tighten it up a bit at a time, but there is the risk of just making it wear out faster.
