  • 1953-'55 C&K trunk mat photos

Does anybody have an original '53-'55 C&K trunk mat that they could photgraph for me. I'd like to see how it was fitted and if it was under the spare tire.

    Kindest regards,

That pattern looks aftermarket or for a very specific year model, maybe '56-'58 as I have only seen the more checkerboard pattern of woven burlap/straw or whatever material in early C/K's. I don't recall having ever seen a linear pattern like that.

But the shape certainly is right on, and it's a very nice looking old stock appearing mat Dick.

My '54 Champion Starliner had a different pattern, but the same "not under the spare" shape.

Thank you Dick and Rich for the photo and information. Dick: would it be too much trouble for you to take a photo of the underside? That way my wife can get a better idea of how the individual pieces were sewn together. And one more question: is that edging cloth or plastic?

Does anyone have a paper pattern and a sample (scrap piece) of
an original mat that for sure was in a 53?

The material is kind of a woven burlap as Rich indicates. Here's a close up of the pattern...

Come to think of it, this MAY be an early Phantom reproduction. This mat came with that unfinished green starlight coupe I owned that had a complete Phantom interior (headliner to carpet) and this may also have been done by Phantom. I'd trust Rich's input on the original pattern over this picture.

I don't own the mat anymore, and I don't have a picture of the underside unfortunately.

Thanks for the close-up of the material, Dick. I'm pretty sure my wife can figure out how to make it from the picture you supplied.

It's made from Sisal, like this:

Dick S's pictures do not look like the correct material for a 1953. I don't remember any blue in the originals. I have sold off all of my originals, so I don't have one here to compare with (just memory).

Studebaker called the material Mattex. The folks at Phantom Auto Works say the original was made from Raffia, which is from Raffia Palm.

Here's a mat (53) I got from Phantom when they had a batch made up about 6 years ago. They claimed it was an almost exact reproduction.

There is some blue in it.

Tom; I heard here that one of the reasons Phantom stopped making those is that the colors run, so I would be real careful about getting it wet.

Right you are, Rich, I've got a couple of areas where the shading is off. I've gotten caught in the rain a couple of times. Pity.

But this pattern/color was a very close match to the damaged mat that was in the car.

Here are some pix of the NOS '53 trunk mat I bought from JDP about 30 years ago. It may have yellowed a little, but hasn't been exposed to the sun (obviously). As you can see, a mouse decided to use some of it for nesting material. First pix is the top, the second is the underside and the third is installed. It ia laid over a later Hawk mat. You can see some differences in coverage.

                              Thank you, Paul!

That underside photo will really help my wife. I've been looking at woven wall coverings to see if I can find anything similar. Hopefully, when I get some samples, they will prove to be sew-able. Even though I'd like an exact match, something close is better than no trunk mat at all.

                              Kindest regards,
