The front edge of the trunk lid on my 61 Hawk needs to be adjusted downward maybe 1/2 of an inch. I got the car on ebay in pieces and someone else installed the trunk lid. The hinges are bolted to the lid with four bolts. The hinges are bolted to the body with two bolts plus there is a plate on the hinges which goes downward and goes over a "bolt-stud" welded to the inner wheel well. That plate on the hinge has a slot for the weld-stud and currently it is adjusted all the way forward. There is also a hole in the plate towards the rear of the car. Do I need to take the hinge loose and use the hole in the plate instead of the slot?

you probably need new hinges, sorry to say.

What happened to the hinges and why can they not be repaired?

The hinges are worn out. They can be repaired. Compeatly disassemble, weld all the holes, redrill and ream new holes to the proper size, install new pins.
You'll never get the leading edge of the trunk lid to sit down tight against the gasket with the worn out hinges.

I believe that Chuck Collins offers a rebuilding service if you don't want to bother doing it yourself. Used to be that NOS hinges were available but one side was hard to find and I think Stelford's was the only place that had them. I think I heard that they are now sold out.

Worn out cores shouldn't be that hard to find if you don't want to remove the trunk lid while the hinges are being rebuilt.

good luck
