  • Changed my oil yesterday and...

I been running my 57 Transtar around on the road and I did my 100 mile oil change which is the first one since having it rebuilt.
I changed the filter etc. dumped a quart in the filter canister and dumped the other four quart in the motor.
My service manual said it will take 5 qt. for the V8.
Got it all finished cranked it up, let the oil circulate then shut it off, let it set a bit then pulled the dipstick. Oil level indicated she was below the add line. Hmmm. Double checked to make sure I put 5 qt. in. Counted the quart containers. Looked at the dipstick to see if it was seated properly etc. and everything looked good.
Thought maybe someone switched dipsticks on me but since working on the truck I have found most everything to be bone stock down to and including all five of my original wheels.
Anybody else have this oil level/dipstick problem?

Maybe the service manual writer was assuming the oil filter wasn't getting changed during a service when they said 5 qt.
Think I'll go back and re-read that page to make sure I read it correctly.

An oil filter was optional equipment in 1957, Nitram.

The Service Manual specifies 5 quarts for an oil change because that's what the engine oil pan was designed to hold all by itself. As Tom said, if an optional oil filter was fitted, an additional quart must be added to the total to accommodate it. BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

Hey thanks guys. I learned something here. Never knew a filter was optional equipment. Thought I was having problems reading my manual correctly. Glad to have a forum like this for advice or I would have been running around 1qt low. [^]
