I am a new owner of a 1953 Studebaker and I need a battery. People in the auto stores can't help me. Where in MD can I find one?

Thank you for the help.

If the car is stock you will have a 6 volt system. Any reputable FLAPS (NAPA, etc.) should be able to help. If there is not one in your area, try a local farm or tractor supply house. There are still many tractors running around with 6 volt systems (many early 12 volt diesels run off two 6 volt batteries).

Be sure to get a battery with enough plates and capacity. Even though they are all the same physical size in Group 1, they are not the same power. Especially if your 1953 Studebaker is a V8, you will need more of a battery than what they sell for old VWs. If your local auto supply stores don't have them, try Tractor Supply or another farm type store. If that fails, they can be ordered and shipped to you.

I don't know where in MD the OP is, but AFAIR either the Advance or Pep Boys in Annapolis had Group 1's the last time I looked. However, I'm not sure how fresh they'd be as I doubt they're a high turnover item.

If extra power is needed for a V-8, there are always 8 volt tractor batteries.

Also, any Interstate Battery dealer can have a Group 1 delivered to their shop within a week. Battery Wharehouses usually have them, but you don't know how long they've been sitting there. Ordering it in will probably give you the freshest product.

You know, if the system is original, the battery is positive ground?

And, by the way, WELCOME to the Forum.:)

Thanks to all of you for the great responses. They were more than I expected. It is a 6 volt, positive ground system.

I got my six volt battery at NAPA. I asked for the best they had and got a 650 or 700 CCA and It works good!
