  • Subject Rear End

I was cleaning up my underbody and cleaned the rear webing. I found out that I have a 307 tag on my rear and on the webing it has a 44 so I am assuming I have a posi, my question is this a TT rear? The tag must be telling me that this is a 3:07 ratio so highway driving will be a great right? Are these rare or what.

Highway driving will be great, low rpms at highway speed. Don't assume that a 44 rear axle is a posi or TT (they are the same) unscrew the fill hole in the back. If you can insert a finger without hitting anything, you do not have a TT rear axle. 3.07 are not rare, the just don't make for lighting up the tires at a stop light.

I spun the left rear tire and it spun the drive shaft, then I spun the right rear and it did the same thing, it spun the drive shaft does that mean it's a posi unit. I will not be near the car for a couple of days so I can't remove the rear plug. I have wide whites and spokes, I am not trying to burn rubber since those tires are very expensive, I am trying to get some real good gas mileage now, I know my motor will give great perforamce in the upper rpm range. Starting out in second gear is what will worry me with that gear, do I have anything to worry about?

No. I can routinely, on level ground, start my '53 coupe with a 232 V8 in second gear, shifting into OD about 25 mph. I dont' know what your engine is, but anything bigger than a 170 should handle it. Next time you have the car jacked up, put it in park and turn one rear wheel. If the other one goes the same way it is a Twin Traction rear axle. If it goes the opposite direction it's standard.

My 64 Commander has a3.07 and a mild 289. R2 cam, Edelbrock 500, .040 overbore. It also has a flightomatic trans. It moves out real nice, and has low cruise RPM. If you want to burn rubber just pull the shifter into low andstand on the go pedal. It'll do it.

              Rodney:

Quickest and easiest way to check for TT if the tag is missing from the back cover of the diff., is to put your jack under the diff. and lift both wheels off the floor and then rotate one of the tires, if the opposite tire rotates the same way you have TT. Sometimes, if the clutch pack in the TT is excessively worn, the opposite tire will rotate slower than the one that you are turning with your hand, but it will still turn in the same direction. Our 61' Hawk has a 3.07 open diff. (non TT), and with a 289 of course. It has more than adaquate get up and go and is more relaxed on the freeway than our 64' Cruiser with 3.31. If I can believe the tach. the Hawk shows about 2500rpm @ 65mph. I have not as of yet had the opportunity to check the gas mileage on the Hawk. The Cruiser with its 289 and 3.31s gets about 16-17mpg on the freeway.

If that's the case I don't have a tt because when I rotate the wheel the other just looks at me, no motion. Oh well you can't have everything
