After the drilled the hole for the carb to install the v8 thottle rod I had someone push the accelerator down all the way while I observed the position. It did not go all the way back, I tried to adjust the rod however no matter how many times I turned the shaft it did not pull the thottle back any farther. What am I doing wrong? how do I get full thottle where the secondaries open? or does this happen when the passing gear mechinizism is engaged?

you have to open the choke to get the secondaries to open. If you have an auto trans you need to put the stud/ball in the BIG hole in an edelbrock, make a bushing out of some thin flat washers.

Are the holes in the intake large enough for the secondaries to open? The primaries are a little smaller.

I just thought, are you looking down through the top of the carb? The AFB has vacuum secondaries; there's two sets of butterflies in the secondary, one in the baseplate which is mechanically opened, and one in the carb body which is weighted and opens when airflow forces it open. As I said before, the choke needs to be open to allow the mechanical butterflies to open, but you won't see them if you are just looking through the top of the carb unless you reach in there with a pencil or something and push the air operated butterflies open.

this is easier to see on an AVS as the air valve is right at the top, above the dump tubes, on an AFB it's down in there below the secondary venturis so at first glance you might not realize it's there
