  • That d@mn transmission spacer.

OK, everyone says that the 1/2" spacer goes on the driver's (left) side of the car. But Warren's post at http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.c...TOPIC_ID=10555 quotes a service bulletin that says to put one on the right side of the car.

When we took out my trans, the spacer was on the right (passenger's) side of the car. Dave even stowed it on the x-member mounting bolt on that side so we'd remember where it went. And when we put it all back together, we put that spacer on the right side of the car. I confirmed this yesterday.

So it it was on the right side when I got the car... it should go back there, right? Tell me I don't have to pull the transmission mounts and put that thing on the other side of the car... [8]

I have my spacer on my convertible's driver's side as is correct and do not have a clearance problem. Pretty sure you're right, Mike, left side here, right side UK, etc.

No, NO, NO! you are misreading Warren's post. The Bulletin says: "Add a 5/32" thick, 1 1/2" O.D., 15/32" I.D. FLAT WASHER", it does not say MOVE or ad the 535XXX whatever, part # 1/2 inch thick iron SPACER!! [:0] [:0]

I read it to say: leave the Left hand spacer alone, and add "a flat washer" on the right IF the Driveline "U" joint hits on a CONVERTIBLE ONLY "X" frame member!

It sounds like you are saying that you put it back exactly like it was, and it just happens to have been wrong!

Does the use of this spacer apply to Avanti which uses the convertable frame?

I don't believe the Avanti has the problem due to the fact that its front motor mounts are shorter causing the tailshaft to tilt upwards (slightly) increasing clearance. This applies only to automatic transmission equipped vehicles.
