  • 56 Golden Hawk engine...

While at a show on Fathers Day, I noticed something interesting.. A 56 Packard Caribbean had the hood open and a display card in front of the car. The card indicated the engine was the 352 cubic inch, 275 HP, etc, but this one had, two, 4 barrel carbs.
Why is the engine in the 56J, rated at 275 with only one carb....or was the Caribbean owner underrating his car..

    Hi, Bob,

You are correct, the '56 Caribbean 374" with 2-4bbls was rated at 310 HP. Could you have been looking at a '55 Carib with the 352" 2-4bbl and 275 HP? FWIW, in '56, the 352" got a bit more compression, a slightly longer cam and made the same 275 HP with 1-4bbl.

      Jack,

I was at the same show and the car was indeed a 55, not a 56 Caribbean. A beautiful example,BTW. See lstude's post in Studebaker specific discussion under Sully Pix for a shot of the car.

I have a letter from WJ Moeller service director SASCO........he states that the 374 engine had a mbhp rating of 290.

Yes, Laemmie, the 374" single 4-bbl in the Patricians did have a 290 HP rating. The Caribbean 2-4bbl engine was rated at 310 HP.
