  • Wiring question

I have a new wiring harness for the 64 Cruiser. Is the procedure outlined in the Shop maunal for "Instrument Board 1963 Lark and Cruiser" the same for the 64? I have the new harness 98% tagged at both ends and I believe I can do it myself if I just take my time and identify each wire as I remove it from the car and compare to the new harness. As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

I think it's all mostly the same. The key switch is on the left of the column on a '63 though.

I have always found it easiest to remove the entire dash with harness attached. Just unplug the turn signal switch, rear harness, and dimmer switch- then follow the harness out the firewall and remove all the engine/lights connections. Don't forget to remove the heater cables, and interior light wire.
Unbolt the dash, steering column-to-dash clamp (it helps to LOOSEN the three steering gear mounting bolts on the frame),And remove the windshield trim. Have someone feed the engine harness through the firewall as you remove the dash (out the passenger door).
I lay mine out on a table, and photograph the wiring hook-ups. Remove the old harness and install the new- using the pics to help. ADD a long jumper-wire to each gauge to provide a better ground...that Stude never used.
I have done this so many times.. I recently did a complete removal/install of a '64 Cruiser Harness in 4 1/2 hours.
