In the early planning of the Caddy swap in my 59 truck I'll need to research a Chevy wheel bolt pattern rear with a good highway ratio. Someone suggested a Nova, someone else "thought" a Camarao rear would drop right in. Any idea's on year and model to look for in the bone yard ? BTW, it's the 59 inch wheel to wheel wider late truck rear.

Unless Dick happens to know off the top of his head, you may do well to toss the question out on the Truck Talk site. The have a search function too, but there have been a number of threads about rear end and gear swaps. While most are concerned with changing the ratio for greater speed, there are also ones about updating axles and adding disc brakes.

The 70 1/2 to 81 Camaro Firebird Nova(and several other GM variants that are less common) are essentiall the same and use the 8 1/2 ring gear, and have a 5 on 4 3/4 wheel lug pattern. They are set up for leaf springs, and about 55-56 inch wide flange to flange(IIRC). Older Camaros, chevelles and Novas, etc. use a similar rear end with an 8.2 ring gear, but parts are less commonplace and don't interchange as well.. The former is what I would recommend--they are very popular for swaps. I you need one that is wider, the full-size GM cars used the same gears in a somewhat wider housing(try wagons) during the late 70s and 80's. Some of them(wagons, police & 98's, electras) used a 5 on 5" bolt pattern. They were all set up for coil springs, but you can torch off the backets and weld spring pads on for leaf springs. Cadillacs are the one I've seen posis in, usually. If the car had overdrive, it probably will have a 3.42 ratio, but most non-od were higher geared. G-series vans used the widest housing of all, with 5 on 5 wheels.

I have had two 1959 Studebaker pickups with Chevelle rear ends in them. They both worked well and have a good highway ratio. One had a 400 in front of it and the other a 350.

No, they are originally 5X5, but both of my 1959s had/have GM subframes in front so that matches up with the GM rear ends (as far as bolt pattern).

Here you go, chev pattern 5 on 4 3/4, numerous ratios, lsd or freewheel, very strong, disc brakes, independant and cheap. What more could you want.

Sounds like your having fun..My question is why a GM rear end with a 4 3/4 or 5 inch bolt pattern. Why not a Ford 9" rear with a 300 plus rear gear. ( I don't know trucks) Ford has a 4 1/2 bolt pattern the same as Stude cars and the Avanti. You can always have a machine shop drill out and plug the the hub bolt pattern that you need. The Ford 9" is the strong "boy" hot rodders use and can be adapted to any vehicle. I'm running a ford 8" in a 40 ford and a ford 8.8 in a 28 Buick, both with GM 350's as the power plant. Early ford rear ends, are tough and can handle a Caddy power plant.

Ford has a 4 1/2 of 5" bolt pattern for the most part..................with both the 8" and 9" rear ends. Should cost at a swap meet $100 to $ 250 depending on the ratio.
