View Full Version : leaking oil drain plugs

Don't know if anyone else has had any problem with oil drain plugs leaking but I have and I finally figured it out and fixed it .
The drain plug on my 289 engine has always been a problem keeping it from having a slight drip . Well after trying many different types of washers and not always getting it to stop for any period of time I decided to look into it a bit deaeper. Well I was happy to learn that it was nothing to do with the oil pan itself , diidn't want to get into taking that off if I didn't have to . Turned out it was the oil plug itself ! The flange at the end which the washer goes up against wasn't square with the threaded part. This made for a slight gap between the pan and the washer. What I did to fix this was to mount the plug in a lathe and take a few thousands off the inside of that flange untilit was all cleaned up . This has solved my problem .
One way of checking to see if yours is square with edge of the pan is to on the next oil change using a new washer hand tighten the plug back into your pan then take a feeler gauge a couple of .001 thick and run it along the outside between the washer and the pan , if its not square the gauge will slip between the both of them . I got .005 in one spot on mine , no wonder I couldn't get it to stop . Anyways its an easy fix .

Does your 289 have the oil pan with the Large drain plug '51 to '57 type, or the late small type '58 to '64? Hard to understand what you are doing, not knowing that.

This is a ' 64 engine, the plug is 5/8 in .
