  • What would happen if......

What would happen if the converter in a hawk was misaligned? If a converter was rebuilt and there was a problem with it's " balance" what would happen to the motor and trans. any thought's has this happened before?

A couple of days ago I got the tool used to "center" the torque converter. I made the adjustments and friday we were going to put the motor back in my hawk. The machinist was not happy with he converter and decided to again check the runout at the converter's hub as it pertains to the converter housing. What he found was after turning the motor over 5 or 6 times the run out change from .005 to .070 and more, he maitains that if I were to have put the motor in the car and ran it the main bearings would have failed. We sent the converter to a company that specializes in rebulding and found that when th to halfs were welded back together they were out of line. I wonder how many times this has happened to folks trying to put there car back together and had bearings fail for no reason. I am very glad I had someone that was concerned enough to check my stuff out before I installed it [ ]Hey it's spring and I am almost done! I hope this helps others.

Got the report from the converter rebuild company, they said that the converter is aligned and is balanced. I wonder if there is anything else I can check before puting everything back together? I am concerned about vibration. Any thoughts?

Well, got some good news yesterday on the answering machine, They found out what was wrong with my trans - converter set-up, very simple really and things are rolling along good again. These cars are very different than other makes I guess that's why Studebaker fans tend to stay with just this make, I guess all the experts here where on vacation, funny when I was building the motor the opinuns flowed like mississippi swap water. It's a good thing I went with my altered plan, with gas prices going though the roof a 300 hp stude would have been a nightmare. The dished piston and lower commpression set-up will allow me to run "REGULAR" without the ping ping.
