  • Bent Dipstick

This may be a novice question/experience, but it's new to me. I drove my 46 M15 home from school (I am a HS Teacher) and just before I got to the house, started smelling an odor like burnt brake linings or the clutch. Could not find anything so passed it off as one of "those old truck things", started it the next morning, BIG noise coming from back of the engine. Took it to a friends shop, while it was running he pulled the dispstick and the noise stopped, dipstick looks like the front of a snow ski. Anyone had any experience like this? What are possible causes? Thanks in advance.

I doubt if the two things are related. Maybe the odor was from a dragging brake, the driveshaft parking brake perhaps? Your truck has the dipstick attached to the oil fill/breather cap? I've seen a few of those that would hit the crankshaft unless they were rotated to just the right position. Sometimes that means the engine or oil pan were changed and the dipstick is no longer the correct length. Your truck should have an oil pan depth of 7 15/64". The dipstick should measure 17 3/4" from the bottom of the breather cap. From the bottom of the stick to the full mark should be 2 7/32".

Bill, in the Pontiac world, bent dipstick + noise = detached lower dipstick tube... but Studes don't have one of those [|)]

What I DO know (from personal experience) is that you need to pull that dipstick and NOT USE IT AGAIN until you've figured out the cause. Put a cork or something in the tube to keep the oil in, and keep the dipstick under the seat - if you leave it in there, there's a possibility it can get caught and wrapped around the crank. I've seen it happen [V]

On the early Champ six engines with the fill tube/breather cap/dipstick at the rear, you could put the dipstick/breather cap on in such a way that it could rub on the crankshaft. Sometimes it sounds like a lifter/tappet click, but if it were to rub real hard, I suppose it could get hot. Perhaps if it were re-installed when the engine was running it might have hit something and got bent. There should be a plethora of straight, used, dipsticks out here in the Stude world...
