Ran across this little story in a 1955 Motor Magazine the other day:
Prior to the Studebaker-Packard merger, Jim Nance, then president of Packard, always had a stock answer when asked about prospects of his company joining forces with another firm. "We're dressing up the bride to make her more attractive to a suitor", Nance would come back. "Are you still dressing up the bride?" he was asked at the company's press preview of its 1956 products. Nance looked at the display around him, the Studebaker car and truck lines, the Packard and Clipper cars. "No," he chuckled, "the bride is happily married and raising a family."
