  • Removing Horn ring?

I need to remove the horn ring on my early { Dec 61 dob} 62 Hawk. This cars has no extra outer ring, assembly paraells the spokes on the steering wheel. I tried gently prying on the the large button, but only managed to pry an outer cover off the button, leaving the remainder of the button with the Hawk crest still attached. The factory manual is very vague in this area. Help Please!! THANKS in advance Lou Cote [8D]

    Lou,

The horn button is held in the horn ring by a large o-ring. I usually use a thin putty knife with some masking tape on it. Slide it under the horn button, gently put some upward pressure on the horn button. Do this all around the horn button and it will come up. But be gentle!

Squirt some lube in there to help it slip out.

That clear cover you removed should not have come off without the crest. As Lou indicated, there is an o-ring that may have become hardened over the years. It is available new for $2.

As the horn button sits in a recessed area how or where am I supposed insert putty knife/scraper? to lift off horn button. I need to get in there to replace horn switch and canceling piece on turn signals. THANKS again Lou Cote [8D]
