  • Studebaker Skytops - Registry Listing and Discussion

Below is the Studebaker Skytop Registry list. While the Skytop website at www.studebakerskytop.com is still online (for now), the Skytop Registry section has been removed from the website and a link to this thread inserted in its place. A listing on the SDC Forum is much easier to maintain and hopefully will get more views.
As cars change locations and (hopefully) more Skytops surface, the listing below will be updated so the Skytop Registry list is always in this first post.

If you know of Skytops that may not be listed, or have stories to tell about Skytops, or have a Skytop for sale, or have cool Skytop photos, or have questions about Skytops – post them on this thread. That’s what this thread is all about!

    Paul -

Thanks for keeping this up. I do not see where to read the footnotes. Please explain.

As you know, I had two red, V8, hardtop Skytops. The 1961 went to John Dillon (shown). The 1963, a low mileage original needing cosmetics, that I knew since new, went to a guy (name escapes me) in Mass. He had the car redone and sold it. I have seen it for sale again after that. I do not know the present owner or location. I believe that you had previously listed the S/N.

EDIT: I believe that it was Wayne Mullin, in Mass., that I sold the '63 to. He has since sold it.

Gary, I was in the process of editing the table when you looked at it. The superscripts had been added, but was still working on adding the notes. You should be able to see them now.

The '63 you used to own, serial number 63V 30419, is now in Australia.

Thanks, again, Paul. Now I see the footnotes and "my" 1963. I owned it about nine years. If the current owner would like information about the original owner, the car's use, storage, mileage, etc., he may contact me.

I attended the North Central Zone Meet in Rapid City, SD 1981 and this Man had a 1963 Daytona Skytop. He won his Class. Anyone remember his name? I think it was a 4-speed car.

I always thought that there were a disproportionate number of red Skytops. I thought that this may have coming from the fact that both of mine were red. Going through your listing of existing Skytops, I note that 12 of 43 (where colors are given) are red. This is 28%. Perhaps many of these Skytops started as show cars or dealer feature/stock cars.

This may be Paul Mikkelsen's car (63V 10567). Paul lives in Nebraska, and has owned the car since the mid-1960s. I don't see any Avanti-powered badges on the front fenders, but other items (exterior color, interior color, Skytop color, 4-speed) match up. See more info and pics of Paul's car here: http://www.studebakerskytop.com/picspg3.html (scroll down some on that page).

It is still hard to believe there are not more survivors. Paul - Thanks again for keeping the list going.

Does anyone know how many were initially built? Without that number, it would be hard to know how we are doing on survivors. My 1961 came from Mass. and my 1963 came from here in the Mid-Hudson Valley of NY. The next closest one that I remember is in NJ. From my observations, I believe that a VERY small percentage of 1961-1963 Larks had Skytops. Perhaps there were other areas of the country, than where I frequented, that had more Skytops. For example, I remember more Packard Hardtops and Packard Hawks in this area and they are only for one year (1958) and only 1263 total in the World.

I'm realizing it is a very small number. "Studebaker people' collected up the rarities over the years.. If there were more, we would see them or see them turn up every once in a while. They just don't. I have seen several Studebaker collectors' whole 100+ collections turn up for sale and rarely see a Skytop in the group.

I agree. I am probably one of few that has owned two of these Skytops.

Sunroofs were rare on any American car in those years when convertibles were still available. 1960 Thunderbirds with factory sunroofs are rare: http://automotivemileposts.com/thund...fregistry.html ; as are 1968 Cougars so equipped.

In the early 1970's, GM offered a sunroof on certain Novas and Venturas, as well as Buick Skylarks, which were made of fabric like Studebaker's Skytop. http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.c...Nova&styleid=1 They are also a rarity in proportion to the total number of cars built that offered them.
