View Full Version : Distributor oil leak Avanti R1 engine

I have an oil leak coming from the base of the distributor on my engine. It has an aftermarket Mopar electronic distributor. Will this use a regular Studebabker gasket or is there some special technique to stop the leak? Any help would be appreciated. John

Need more information. Is it a Stude dist. Prestolite converted or a modified Chrysler unit fixed to fit the Stude? If it is the Stude Prestolite it should seal with just the stock gasket between the dist. and block. Some early motors have 2 holes for the dist. mounting and you can use 2 clamps if the housing is bad at the flange.

The engine is a 64 Avanti and from the data I have this is an electronic Mopar distributor that fits the Studebaker. It uses a regular black dist cap and looks almost like the stock one. Ity has elctronics that are mounted on the firewall and has it's own wiring harness. The kit came this way from the parts house and needed no additional modifacation. It was done before I bought the car. After a good run I can see where the oil is leaking where the clamp is. To my knowledge, it has only one mounting hole. Thanks John

First, make sure it's the distributor and not the rubber oil line. The Mopar will use the same gasket.

you have to use a gasket for a Stude; a MoPar distributor uses an O-ring but you don't have a MoPar housing, you have a stude prestolite housing with MoPar guts. I think this is what the other posters were trying to say but I thought I would just make this explicitly clear in case there was any confusion.

When my R-2 was rebuilt the builder left out that gasket and I can assure you that it will leak quite a bit of oil without that gasket.
To answer your question, I installed a MoPar-type electronic distributor in my '64 Wagonaire. It used a standard Studebaker gasket.

Thanks. It does draw attention. It's kind of strangely equipped- 289 2bbl, single exhaust, manual steering and brakes, but has reclining buckets, Powershift, clock, p/b AM radio, tinted w/s... It was sold new in California (near Santa Barbara) then moved to Texas some years ago. I bought it this past spring from a man in Cleveland who brought it there in '04. It has never seen snow/ice/salt and is now and always has been completely rust-free.

The 64 Daytona convertible I have now is a Canadian model. It was owned by Art Unger about 25 years ago. He did a lot of the restoration on it. In 1965, my dad bought a new 64 Daytona convertible with 289 4spd, Twin Traction, Disc brakes, bucket seats, Bordeauz red with a black top and interior. I bought it from him a couple of years later and we went on my honeymoon in it to the Smokies. I went searching for another 4speed about 5 years ago and finally found this one about 3 years ago. It has been a lot of fun, but my wife doesn't see much sentimental value in it. She thinks they are ugly! Oh well!
