  • La Carrera Panamericana in two days

The biggest gathering of racing 53-54 Studebakers gets underway on the 12th of this month.

Great times last year (see the February 2018 issue of TW) but I'll be back in Bakersfield this year for the Hot Rod Reunion. A few pictures from 2016.

My buddy Javier Villanuvea's friend Carlos Ramierez will have a car in this year's Panamericana. Carlos has raced before as a copilot but this is his first year with his own car. It was completed just days ago in Efrain Vega's shop. Efrain builds many of the Panamericana race cars.

Here are a few pictures of the build...

Here is the car's first dyno pull...

    Dyno results...

Keep in mind, Efrain's shop and dyno is in Ajusco, about 3,000 meters (9,000 feet) above sea level.

Carlos' car will run in the Turismo de Production class which limits engine size to 310 cubic inches, iron heads, one 600 CFM 4 barrel, etc.

    Best of luck to Carlos!!

Nice looking car. What is the powerplant? SB Chevy? It sure does like to rev.

The roll cage looks hell for stout.

I'm not sure, but I'd guess an '87 and up 305.

Hopefully Javier or Carlos will see this and chime in.

I love this race and all the great Studebaker action. I hope to go down there to see it run someday. Someone posted a video a year or two ago taken with a camera inside one of the Studebakers and the results were breathtaking. Those drivers have nerves of steel and amazing endurance. I almost got car sick just watching it.

Its needed sometimes! I’ve run it a few times with my dad in a 55 Chrysler 300 and this was from 2012 which was the last year we ran it. When we went by all that was there was the yellow Stude which continued with the event after some minor repairs. They had a pretty big drop to get down there

Nice! I really like these cars. That 49 Caddy fastback is one of my favorites.

I don't see what caused the incident? Glad he is OK.

As I understand, later model Vortex heads (like in my 1998 Chevy c2500) and matching intake really wake those 305's up. I don't think they would change the c.i. either. YMMV though.

                          Greetings from Mexico.
Just asked Carlos Ramirez about the specifications on his engine, it is a 305 and he is willing to share the full specifications and parts, the race practices started today and he finished 12th overall, and first in class, not bad for a cat that just finished it's build last friday and is completly new to Carlos.
here are the first day results.

Douglas Mockett's Oldsmobile did not participated in today's practices.
here is a nice video of his Oldsmob
