How to tell a six volt compared to a twelve system

How can I tell if a car (pre-55) has been wired for twelve or six volt?

Check the voltage regulator and generator. Whatever is stamped on them will tell you what voltage the car is set up for. My houseguest provided this info for me to type to you.

April first is a ways off....
Follow the battery cable from the block to the battery.
If it is hooked up to the '+', then it is a correctly wired pre-56 6 volt (positive ground) system.
If it is hooked up to the '-', then someone has jammed a 12v battery in there (and you will see stuff disconnected, or added voltage drops (resistors, etc).. You'd most likely see a ballast resistor in the primary distributor wiring also...
