57 Golden Hawk Fuel Pump. I have it in my hand, now what?

No fuel being pumped from tank to carb. I will get a rebuild kit on order tomorrow because I just want fresh pump, but here is my question. How can I check the pump out of the engine?

You can work the arm up and down while holding your finger over the inlet and see if you feel suction, then put your finger over the outlet and see if you feel pressure while again moving the arm up and down. Works better with a vacuum/pressure gauge but if you have no access to one you can get an idea this way whether the pump died or not. If it checks good problem is elsewhere like pin holes in fuel line or plugged line.

Ok, it doesn't make sense but this is what I found when checking it 41 Frank. The outlet to the carb will pull a vacuum, but the inlet from the fuel tank doesn't pull vacuum or pressure. Why would it pull a vacuum on the outlet to the carb?

Attach a small hose to the inlet and insert in to a jar of solvent then pump the lever, it should squirt the solvent out the outlet about 6 feet. It should only take about two or three strokes.

Sounds like the check valve on the inlet side is not working. Either bad or stuck open, possibly by crud/rust flakes...etc.

Then and Now Restorations have the correct rebuild kit with excellent instructions. You need to give them the number stamped on the flange to order it.

WOW! My electric pump was under $10. I guess I should sell the half dozen new mechanical pumps I have.

Am I missing something? A whole 1957 Golden Hawk fuel pump is $80 from SI and probably other vendors.

I don't get why those rebuild kits are so expensive either.
The problem with buying a complete pump is, how do you know it will stand up to crap gas?

I don't believe that SI actually has any pumps although it is in a catalog and if they do it is an Airtex which seem to fail quickly. I've got two nonworking ones right now.
Also the correct Carter fuel pump has a vacuum line which goes to the super charger. I believe I paid about $45 for the kit I got from Then and Now and has modern materials which stand up to today's gas. And again- the best instruction sheet I have ever seen with an auto part.

Nothing wrong with that 10 pump, unless the car is supercharged. As 5brown1 states, there is a vac/pressure line going from the fuel pump to the supercharger. When boost increases, it increases the fuel pressure to balance things out at the carb.

Also, a genuine Carter is just better built and does not leak oil.
