View Full Version : '48 M-Series ID

On my Tech Talk post regarding M-series fender interchangeability I was given a lot of good info on the history of Stude trucks. From what I learned I believe the '48 truck I just bought is a M15A-20 so I'm now posting some pics so the forum can confirm this. The only thing that doesn't add up is the lack of a data plate on the drivers side seat riser which according to history was moved from the engine side cowl to the seat riser in '46-'48. I have not taken delivery yet so I can't check the cowl but you can see in the pic that there is no plate on the riser. It's either missing or it's not a '48. Your inputs will be greatly appreciated.

The tag on the engine firewall is a body ID tag only is has no real relationship to the serial number.
Service Bulletin #176 October 1946 says " The caution plate on the M5, M15A and M16 trucks, carrying the serial number, gross rating, etc., has been moved on a few trucks from the left front door pillar to the front of the seat riser on the driver's side. Hereafter, the caution plate will be located on the left side of the seat riser."
So maybe this truck is a '47 and possibly that's where the serial plate is located. If it was on the seat riser you will find two small holes there where the attaching screws were removed.

Those do not appear to be "Tip Out" Windshields as used on the Military Version.

I believe this Military version may be called an M15-C WITH Tip Out Windshields and overhead Wipers.

The information I was sent indicated the government only allowed 4000 of the C9 cab military versions to be sold to the public to satisfy a truck shortage in industry & agriculture. My wipers are on the cowl so I know mine is a civilian model. If the data plate is missing from the seat riser (or door pillar) are there other ways of verifying the year?

There should also be a serial number plate on the frame rail behind the left front tire. With the 8' bed your truck would be a M15/M15A with 120" wheelbase.
