  • Convertible top motor needed for a 1961 Lark

Hello readers. The subject line says it all: my convertible's top motor is so tired out that it won't raise the top properly without a couple of other people helping it. A local reputable convertible top shop confirms that it's the motor that's the issue; the cylinders are fine.

My question, then, is: does any forum reader have one of these motors they'd be willing to part with ? Yes, I'd much prefer a new unused motor, or at least a lead or a recommendation as to where to get one. If a trustworthy rebuilt one can be had, that's also an option.

Thanks to all, and here's to looking forward to being able to drop the Lark's top soon....without worrying that I can't put it back up !

    Convertible Top Specialists at http://www.topsdown.com/index.html.

They do not list the pump on their website, but do on eBay:

1960-1964 Studebaker Lark slowing down or not working at all?. convertible top hydraulic pump motor made just for your car. Is the convertible top on your.

    They also have the Pistons.
Here are the convertible top lift cylinders (also called rams), all of our top lift cylinders are completely new and are made as exact replacements for your car. We do not sell 'universal' or rebuilt rams, all of our cylinders are backed with a 3 year warranty when not used with brake fluid. We also have a page under the 'HOW TO BLEED YOUR SYSTEM' button with everything you need to know about hydraulic convertible top systems, it is a must read if you are replacing your top cylinders, lines or pump. This cylinder fits 1964-68 Rambler American, Classic, Ambassador and Rebel convertible cars, they are sold individually and are the same for the right or left side of the car.

I needed one for my 60 Lark a few years ago & found that the top pumps found in Mustangs & Chrysler Sebrings were exactly the same, even the plug for the wiring was identical. Body shop I worked at in the mid 90's had a Saab convertible that, when the used parts came for it, had the exact same top pump, so they are very common.
