  • Steering: Power Steering for 6 cyl. Lark

Are there any power steering units for 6 cylinder Larks? I have a '59 Lark VI and the steering is quite heavy in close situations. I'm almost 81 and don't have the arm strength I used to have.
    All the best,

To ease the steering effort without adding power assisted steering, I would change the steering box to a 1961 and later recirculating ball Saginaw System.

And since you're talking about tight driving, obviously you do enough of it to complain.....Consider bias ply tires if you're on radials.....

Also make SURE you do not have OVERSIZE Tires, it came with 600X15 In.

Check the Kingpins, Steering Center Support, Tie Rods, for well greased and free and easy to turn.

Has the Steering Gear Lube been checked?

Has the Wheel ALIGNMENT been checked?

Usually, a '59 Lark 6 in good shape would would be quite easy to turn.

I ditto the change to a 61-66 Saginaw unit. They have much less friction than the original Ross gear and my '60 Lark VI steers light as a feather with one.

I owned a '62 Lark with six cylinder and no power steering. It steered so nice that when I first drove it I thought it had power steering.

Yes, power steering can be added. I do not recommend doing it.
Make sure everything is in good shape and properly lubricated. The thrust washers at the top of the king pins are the most important and overlooked items relative to easy steering.
