  • Rear Axle: Is there a trick to this?

I just finished repacking the rear wheel bearings on my ‘63 Hawk, and wanted to ask does anyone have a “trick” to keep things from turning while tightening the axle nut with the car still up on jack stands?
While thinking about this in bed last night, thought it wouldn’t be good to do with the wheels on the ground because the drum can’t then get pulled on to the axle shaft straight. Or am I over thinking this? Thanks all!!

I think you're overthinking this. I always tighten as much as I can while car is raised. Then with car lowered I finish the job. Remember, tires have plenty of lateral play.

I use an old oak axe handle; lodge it between 2 studs and as the axle turns it wedges itself against the garage floor. Being wood it doesn't do any damage to the studs while the axle nut is torqued.

I've tried the wood block, which can work but can get a bit wobbly when you get beyond 150 lbs torque....You tend to lift the rear end up. Don't worry about getting up to lug nut tight, then drop the car and finish with the wheels blocked...
