  • Rear Axle: rear oil

I found some old info. about rear end oil and just making sure that a lube oil Gl-5 85w-90w 0r a 90w Hypoil gear oil is good for a 54 studebaker champion with a Dana 23

Last time I tried rear end oil, I kept slipping off the toilet seat.

Most if not all GL5 gear oils for automotive use will be 80W-90 or 85-140 in conventional lube and the synthetics will be 75W-90 or 75-140. Either 80W-90 or 75W-90 synthetic will work well in your Champion differential. Bud

A little STP does't hurt either.

Just don't put that in the transmission.

I don't know that I would add STP to the differential gear lube. If there is a reason to thicken up the lube, then I would recommend going to either the 85W-140 conventional or the 75W-140 synthetic lube. In most cases the lighter lube works just fine. Bud

Sorry if I am stepping on your thread but I had a question while on this subject, can someone tell me which weight oil should be used in a Dana 44 and does need an additive also.

As stated above 80-90 or 85-140 conventional GL 5 gear lube or 75-90 or 75-140 in a synthetic will work good. You will only need an additive if you have a Twin Traction differential. Without removing cover you can tell if you have it by removing fill plug, if you can't fit your finger in you have a TT unit. The diff unit is much larger on TT. units Lou Cote

Yes,Yes (or NO, NO) Do not put STP in trans. It is probably too slippery. Tried other than GL 85-90 and the syncos didn't work. Took a couple changes to get the stuff out. But I do put a little in diff. But I would not put it in a Twin Traction rear end.

The GL # does not have anything to do with the WEIGHT!
NAPA or Tractor Supply GL-1 is the only Dino gear Lube to use in Manual & O.D. Manual Transmissions.

Do not use GL-4 or GL-5 or ANY Combination of GL's as some Mfg.'s tend to do.
