I was changing the speedo pinion gear that goes into my ‘63 GT Hawks 4-speed to what I thought was the correct one for a 3.73 rear ratio from the original one for a 3.31. The teeth on the “new” one slant left to right and the original one slants right to left. Is this a problem?

I wonder what it fits, but for sure it will be a problem.

Obviously it is, since it won’t go in.
Part# is 1547613 which according to the parts catalog chart is correct. What am I missing?

Could it be that the pinion gear was pressed onto the shaft upside down?

Would still be the same slant. You would need to turn it inside, out to reverse the slant. I wonder if it's a Chinese reproduction. I bought a set of headlights that had all the indexing tabs as a mirror image of a stock headlight. Vendor was so ticked that he didn't even want them back, just refunded my payment.

No worries about THAT! There ARE no reproduction Studebaker SW Speedo Pinions.
The Original Studebaker and Stewart Warner Numbers are on those.

UPDATE: Kyle: you bought the THREE Speed and Avanti Automatic Gear!
The 4 Speed gets a 1555105 Gear with a 3.73 Axle Ratio.

Obviously the Pinion mounting Height location is Below the Drive Gear on one, and Above on the other. :(

Thanks so much everyone, especially StudeRich! Looking at the parts catalog and I can’t believe I never even looked at or saw the 4-speed part of the gear & pinion chart!! None is so blind as who won’t see!!
That being said, wouldn’t I need either 1560544 or 1556037? The 1555105 is a pinion & adaptor assembly for 62’s.

Yes my mistake sorry, I forgot you have a '63 with a Ford Case T-10, not a Chevy Case.
So your Pinion is no longer available.
You will have to search the other Vendors, not S.I.

There is only ONE correct Pinion Gear for a '63 4 Speed with a 3.73 Axle ratio.

If the Drive Gear for the 3.31 Axle is not the same tooth count as the one for 3.73, the Tail Housing has to be removed and the Drive Gear changed.
