  • Rear Axle: what does this # mean

The real axle seal decided to start leaking on my 56 Champion Sedan just sitting in the garage. Oh well could have been worse, I could have been 50 miles from home.

Anyway I want to order seals for it but the only tag I have found so far is located on the bottom left on the rear housing cover. It looks like 41 over 9. Maybe 4L over 9

I know one of you guys will know. Thanks again in advance for your assistance.

This indicates the number of teeth of the ring gear (41) and the pinion (9).
So, your rear axle is a 41/9= 4.56. I should say your Champion is equipped with an overdrive.
    Nice day to all.

The Dana/Spicer Pinion Seals are all the same for Studebaker Cars, Dana Model 23, 27 and 44, and all Ratios.

      It's: 199379X1 at Studebaker Vendors.

Thanks for the input. Are the axle seals the same on all? From what I see in the book the 23 and 27 are the same but the 44 is different. How do I know for sure which one I have?

Yes It does have Overdrive. Once I got it working correctly again the car is fun to drive.

            It DOES NOT MATTER. But, a Champion 6 would have a Dana Model 23, a smaller Axle than a '56 V8 with a 44.

Not that it matters, but the RAISED "23" will be cast into the Right hand "Web" between the right axle tube (socket) and the Diff. Case.

            Pinion Seal > 199379X1
Outer Axle Seal and retainer > 533161
            Inner Axle Seal > 530573

All Cars -1951 to early 1965 with tapered Axles.

I was able to fine the model 27 seals at FLAPS; evidently it was common to several cars.
