  • Trying to start the 53 Champion

Today is my day off and the weather here was not what the weatherman had promised, but this afternoon it was agreeable enough to try to start the 53 I bought from Studedick. First the good stuff. The carburetor looked new inside, not even any stains in the bowl. The plugs, cap, rotor, and points look new except for surface rust on the plugs. The oil and filter looked good. Not what I had expected.
The bad. Although the engine will crank over all I get is a loud backfire. Think shotgun under the hood. :0 I tried to check the distributor to see if the plug wires were installed wrong, but they appear to be okay. What's up? Stuck valve? Anybody got any suggestions?
I ran out of time before I could try any more ideas.

Check for distributor installed 180 degrees off.

I think of backfire as poor valves . BUT, could the distributor wires be in place at top dead center on the exhaust stroke????[?]. That would put the cam ( valve opening and closing) out 360 ( or would it be 720 degrees? some one help me here) degrees with the crank shaft.

At the point that pressure blew my finger off of the #1 spark plug hole the rotor was pointing to the number 1 wire.
I just remembered. I did not notice any fire or smoke out the carburetor when the car backfired. Exhaust valve stuck open?

Plug wires mounted for clockwise rotation? Distributor runs counter-clockwise?

I'll have to check. I checked for #1, but since the engine shows signs of someone working on it they might have gotten the rotation wrong. Unfortunately, I have to work outside and with the days being so short by the time I get off from work I have no time during the week. I will probably have to wait until next Monday.[V]

Suggest you run a compression check. If an exhaust valve is stuck open, you
will read zero on that cylinder.
