Today is my day off and the weather here was not what the weatherman had promised, but this afternoon it was agreeable enough to try to start the 53 I bought from Studedick. First the good stuff. The carburetor looked new inside, not even any stains in the bowl. The plugs, cap, rotor, and points look new except for surface rust on the plugs. The oil and filter looked good. Not what I had expected.
The bad. Although the engine will crank over all I get is a loud backfire. Think shotgun under the hood. :0 I tried to check the distributor to see if the plug wires were installed wrong, but they appear to be okay. What's up? Stuck valve? Anybody got any suggestions?
I ran out of time before I could try any more ideas.
