I believe a similar door frame clamp-on mount mirror was available at the time from Studebaker, in my opinion they look quite period correct and if you can see well in them I would not drill more holes and touch up the paint under those, on a nice Car like that.StudeRich

Joe,
No doubt you are inquiring about the mirror that appears on the '40 being offered at Mecum from your other thread ( http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.c...ecum-this-year ).
Any exterior mirror was optional in 1940, and even in to the 1960's. Factory installed mirrors on this belt line were very rare. The mirror that is attached to your door edge is much more common, and still factory correct. Not to mention extremely more functional. Were it mine, I would stick with what you've got, unless it is ONLY for show, never for driving.
Not to deter you from your search but, I don't believe you can just drill a hole in your molding and add the mirror. They would be an assembly; offering an intriguing hunt.Brad Johnson,

The mirror on my 41 is aftermarket and screwed to the door just behind the A pillar. I am not sure I have seen the same mirror on two different cars. The 41 model line brochure I scanned does not show mirrors on any of the cars or on the accessory page. Here is a link:
I spotted this on e-Bay in September, 2005 and snagged it. I never thought of putting it on the web site but then I found the uber-cool Old Car Manual Project (www.tocmp.com). These will be submitt…

Interesting. My mirror does have a built-in thermometer. The plastic "glass" on the thermometer fell apart so I removed the thermometer from the mirror. I thought it was totally an aftermarket part because I have seen similar mirrors on other cars from the period. I will have to get a picture and post it.

Don't worry, the thermometer is carefully packed up. Someday I will find time to call around to some gauge restoration places and see if they can put new plastic/glass on the front. The mirror base is a bit pitted but the thermometer face looks pretty decent and it even shows the correct temperature.

I wanted a cowl-mounted mirror for my 1941 Commander Land Cruiser Delux-tone, couldn't find one, wound up designing one on the computer, 3D printed a pattern, had some cast in bronze and chrome plated. The mirror mounts via the two existing holes for the chrome trim. I still have two available at $250 each. Not exactly like the air-brushed pictures in the ads, but pretty close. I don't know if it would fit a 1940 car. Jay Fisher used to make some but they were really just modified ones for some other car, not like the Studebaker ads.
