  • another air filter question

due to Wally's thread about the unobtanium air filter element for the early-ish 4bbls, I started redoing that section of the interchange again... I'm revisiting the x-refs for the R1 air filter, 1558962. Some of the numbers listed are about 2.2" high (Wix) and some are 3" high (Fram) - but they x-ref to each other on each other's web site! Which more accurately reflects the element that one would have received with a new R1 powered car? I'm not quite old enough to have seen one installed. I suspect that a 3" high element would have had a little bare paper showing if installed; I have the Wix version on my car and it is pretty much completely hidden.

The good news is that some mfgrs. have started digging back in their catalogs and adding Studebaker p/ns to their online parts x-refs. The bad news is that I don't trust them all.

Does anyone have dimensions of R4 air filters so I can reality check that listing? my info there is real sketchy. I'm not even certain that I know what a "factory" R4 air cleaner would look like.

    thanks,

    nate

The R1 is the Police Intercepter "406" Ford V-8 element, and it is
2 1/16" high, it is a Fram CA181PL. I am looking at the original Fram element packed in the original carton with the 1557265 "Cleaner".

Thanks Rich, now any input on the R4? It was Baldwin/Hastings that appeared to have added Studebaker part numbers to their online catalog/cross-reference, and IIRC (I'm not at home at the moment) that they seemed to think the R4 was the same filter as 6-cyl/R2/R3. Does this sound correct? (I'm guessing there were two housings?) All I have is the Stude. part no. and some info I lifted from an old DD book, and I'm trying to verify/update as info. becomes available.

Do you have a collection of NOS filters or only R1? You seem to have a pretty good handle on the subject, I was wondering if you could check my interchanges before I post an update.

      thanks,

      nate

The R-4 air cleaner is a Corvette item. I don't know what year(s). Jon Myer would know. The R-4 air cleaner on my R-4 is just a piece of foam stretched around a wire mesh (sort of like a K&N).
Maybe you can scale a size from these pix. The first is when I first opened the crates[:0]. The second is from the museum. It was posted some time back on this Forum, but I don't remember by whom.

          Cool![8D]
just for completeness, could you post the ID/OD/thickness of the top/bottom gaskets?
that way we are not tied to obsolete part numbers and shady xref lists.

Wow! It's just a piece of polished aluminum . They must be using a K&N element- they advertise a K&N recharge kit right beside the air cleaner pix.

well heck, that looks like exactly the same size as the single 4bbl vette air cleaner I have on my R1, which accepts the R1 element. Wonder why the different part number; maybe Stude used the oiled gauze for the R4 for some reason. ISTR that the 'vette single 4bbl did but the R1 element works fine (I only have the top tho, I am using a universal base on my Edelbrock AVS... yeah, my car is kind of a mix of parts)

Just posted an update to the interchange after playing Adventures in Insomnia last night and obsessively-compulsively cross-checking online parts listings. I did find a new interchange for the "metal bowl" V-8 fuel pumps, if anyone wants to try it and let me know if it works (got it by punching the STude. no. into Baldwin's web site) also updated a lot of the air filter info. by cross-checking them online and using some of the info. presented in the threads of a past few days. I still don't necessarily trust the R4 listings that I have, but everything else seems pretty solid.
