due to Wally's thread about the unobtanium air filter element for the early-ish 4bbls, I started redoing that section of the interchange again... I'm revisiting the x-refs for the R1 air filter, 1558962. Some of the numbers listed are about 2.2" high (Wix) and some are 3" high (Fram) - but they x-ref to each other on each other's web site! Which more accurately reflects the element that one would have received with a new R1 powered car? I'm not quite old enough to have seen one installed. I suspect that a 3" high element would have had a little bare paper showing if installed; I have the Wix version on my car and it is pretty much completely hidden.
The good news is that some mfgrs. have started digging back in their catalogs and adding Studebaker p/ns to their online parts x-refs. The bad news is that I don't trust them all.
Does anyone have dimensions of R4 air filters so I can reality check that listing? my info there is real sketchy. I'm not even certain that I know what a "factory" R4 air cleaner would look like.
thanks,
nate
