Fire extinguisher recall

Check the fire extinguisher in your Studebaker.
I Saw on the news today Kidde is recalling some of its fire extinguishers. They are some of the ones with plastic handles and nozzles.
I did a search online for Kidde recall and found a list of models affected and a phone number to call. I checked mine and found 2 that were on the list.
I called, and after a long wait on hold was helped by a very courteous customer rep. She took my contact information and the model and serial numbers of my extinguishers. After confirming they were on the list of recalled units she told me I would be receiving new ones in 10 to 15 business days, and gave me a conformation number.

The recall involves about 37.8 million Kidde fire extinguishers, plus 2.7 million in Canada. That covers 134 models of Kidde plastic handle fire extinguishers manufactured between 1973 and 2017; and eight models of Kidde push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers made between 1995 and 2017.

If you have one of the recalled units, you should immediately contact Kidde to request a free replacement. Call Kidde at (855) 271-0773 or visit the company’s website for more information.

Description:
This recall involves two styles of Kidde fire extinguishers: plastic handle fire extinguishers and push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers.
Plastic handle fire extinguishers: The recall involves 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between January 1, 1973 and August 15, 2017, including models that were previously recalled in March 2009 and February 2015. The extinguishers were sold in red, white and silver, and are either ABC- or BC-rated. The model number is printed on the fire extinguisher label. For units produced in 2007 and beyond, the date of manufacture is a 10-digit date code printed on the side of the cylinder, near the bottom. Digits five through nine represent the day and year of manufacture in DDDYY format. Date codes for recalled models manufactured from January 2, 2012 through August 15, 2017 are 00212 through 22717. For units produced before 2007, a date code is not printed on the fire extinguisher.

Push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers: The recall involves eight models of Kidde Pindicator fire extinguishers manufactured between August 11, 1995 and September 22, 2017. The no-gauge push-button extinguishers were sold in red and white, and with a red or black nozzle. These models were sold primarily for kitchen and personal watercraft applications.

Remedy:

Interesting thing about fire extinguishers and other peoples fires.
I haven't carried one in a long time, but I used to have one at semi-easy reach. Over the many years, luckily I never needed to use one on my own car, but I did use it on many other cars, "problems". After giving my name to about 10 people promising a dollar return, as I recall, only one gave me reimbursement money for my effort/use of my extinguisher.
And that one was on the spot with a very grateful "thank you" and a few bucks..!

Really? This recall goes back to 1973. I agree that there is some junk made in China(and elsewhere), but why the blanket bashing? How much stuff were we buying from China in 1973?

I think the commonality in all of this is plastic.
Plastic deteriorates over time. Ozone, UV, lots of things deteriorate plastic.
Some fast...some slow...
A fire extinguisher has to sit and wait. But it cannot fail, do to some plastic part not functioning.
And in todays letigious atmosphere......
The country of mfr? I have no clue, but you'd probably be embarrassed to find out.

It is now Saturday morning and Happy hour was over 14 hours ago and I'm back to being my usual affable self.

I took an inventory of my kitchen, house garage, detached garage, and big shop building, looking at all the fire extinguishers. I have other brands, but I have 6 manufactured by Kidde. All were on the list provided by Jeff. 4 were made in the USA, and 2 in Mexico. None in China

A big "Thank you" to Jeff for posting the list. I'll be on the phone Monday seeking replacements.

With almost 40 million fire extinguisher's being replaced, plus possible law suits for defective units, it's hard to believe Kidde can stay in business.

OK OK so none where made in China. I'll take my whipping. It's just that so much of the stuff from there is junk it just seemed possible. I find it hard to believe they are going all the way back to 73. If you've owned a fire extinguisher for 44 years I would say it time to replace anyway.
