  • Rear Axle: Gear oil

What is the recommended gear oil for a Dana 44 rear end.

  • #2
Hypoid Gear Lube Type GL5 is what you need, it usually comes in 85/90 Wt. or 90 Wt.
Get a GOOD Brand like StaLube or Valvoline.

If you are draining the Diff. and doing a complete change and you have a Limited Slip, Twin Traction Unit you will need a 4 OZ Bottle of the Friction Modifier additive also.

I've been using Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 synthetic gear oil in the differentials of all of my cars. It's rated for limited slip differentials, so an additive isn't necessary. My feeling on the synthetic lubes while being more expensive, they last longer and do a better job of protecting expensive parts. If you don't want to use a synthetic lube such as Amsoil, Red line or Mobil 1, then be sure to buy a lube that comes from a major supplier and not some off brand stuff. I would recommend a 75W-90 in the synthetic lube and 80W-90 for conventional. Bud
