  • Identification of 1955 Commander model.

I recently purchased a 1955 Studebaker Commander Starlight Coupe. How can I tell which model it is, a Regal or a Deluxe? The body plate is 16G8-C5 435.

    Thank you,

    Michael B

Now you will want the Body and Chassis catalogs, as well as the Shop Manual. Keep that nice car nice for a very long time!

        Sharp looking '55 Coupe.

The 1955 Tail Light Housings and Lenses will be a better fit than the 1953 ones the car has.

Don't all '55 hard tops have a Regal interior?

True, Jerry; there are no trim-level 3 1955 hardtops.

But if you notice, Michael's car is a "C" body coupe, not a "K" body hardtop. Therefore, his question as to whether or not it is a Regal is appropriate, since Trim Level 3 coupes were made; not Regal trim. BP

Sharp eye, Rich. I missed that. Not only are the '53 tail lights not correct for the '55, the '55 tail lights are, in my opinion, a safety item, as the lens protrudes from the housing just enough to act as a de facto side marker. And I'm sure there are '53 C/K owners out there who would be more than willing to trade for the correct item. And NO sedan housing would fit; would have to be C/K.

Some people would call the C3 to C5 exterior difference Major Don.
There are NO Window surround MOULDINGS anywhere on the Car! Not the Stainless ON the Glass, the ones below and around it (Belt Mouldings).

You would not get the Wide body side Butter knives either!
The Interiors of course would have simpler, less expensive materials and no Carpeting as well, plus many other smaller interior items like No "Gold" plated Trim, Deluxe Horn Ring etc.

Quite a difference in appearance. Looks like worth the upgrade.
