View Full Version : French Meeting dedicated to Raymond Loewy - Pictures

During the first week-end of september the french Studebaker Amicale held a meeting to commemorate the 40 years of the club. We took this occasion to pay a tribute to Raymond Loewy. We were privileged enough to watch the premiere of a very good documentary about him which will be shown on french television during the next month. We also had the pleasure to eat at the place he owned for so many years, the Domaine de la Cense at Rochefort-en-Yvelines. In fact, the whole town was celebrating him as a designer and the entire town hall was decorated with his creations. I understood that the school pupils particpated a lot to this. I had the pleasure to meet two nice US citizens, Lewis Schucart, editor of the AOAI magazine, and David Hagerman whose late wife was RL's daughter. The three of us spent the saturday afternoon touring in my Hawk before Mr Hagerman delivered his speech with many interesting anecdotes about RL's second wife, which was a close friend of Jacqueline Kennedy and drove her XK 120 across NY city without any concern about the speed limits.
This was really an enjoyable meet and you can see some pictures here:http://www.autodejavel.fr/viewtopic.php?f=102&t=4649. Sorry, the text is in french.
As usual, my Hawk performed this 1000km/3 days trip without any incident. Unfortunately, RL's first french Avanti seized its compressor during the meet. It has been bought on e-bay!
Nice day to all.

Thank you for sharing this event with all the Studebaker world.

A little tip for viewers..
When you open the link, you will see it is in French.
If you 'right click' after opening the web page, you should see an option to 'Translate This Page'.
Left click on that and you should get a translation to the language your system is set to.

http://www.autodejavel.fr/images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gifHello everyone. A priori I am in the right section, but if it is not, thank you very much to the "Staff" Forum, to move my subject in the appropriate section. So this little "Post" to share with you the photos I made this weekend during the 40th anniversary of the Amicale in Rochefort en Yvelines and in the vicinity.

Unfortunately I was not able to come on Friday evening, but arrived at the breakfast on Saturday morning from 8 am at the Hotel "BELAMBRA" located in Dourdan the good atmosphere of our Amicale was already in order although some have " Little Eyes "due apparently to a late episode of sorting of sheets of paper that trained them to lie down towards 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning. I will not go further in this direction knowing that some of you will give us a small description, which will become I do not doubt a crunchy episode that punctuated this beautiful weekend. Below you will find some pictures of our weekend trip, but do not be sorry they are not all, it was unfortunately necessary that I make a selection!

Place now to the few photos that I reaped the time of these two days very joyous! After breakfast a little glimpse of a few "studs" in the parking lot before the start of our Saturday morning tour. The Saturday lunch meal in a stud, which allowed me some pictures of our "Stud". Then we start our tour of the afternoon, with among others the visit of the house "Louis Carré" designed by the Finnish Architect Alvar Aalto. But before we got there, we made an impromptu stop on the roadside as Daniel's Avanti is a whim !!! or gathering specialists from all sides around the patient !!!

After settling the problem we arrived at the house "Louis Carré". This house dates from the time of some of our "Stud" since finished in 1959 if I am wrong, there is even a picture or a "Stud" is represented in front. For those who would like to know a little more, here is a link to a short account of its history. This made us headed for the very nice and good restaurant where the 40th anniversary meal of the Amicale Studebaker was supposed to be. We arrived late, did not allow us to enjoy the beautiful sunset on the terrace of the restaurant, but personally and thanks to our friend Victor Hidalgo, I was able to make this beautiful picture of my "Stud". (I wish we could do a group photo with our dear cars, but the sun would not have left us the time of the organization !!!) It will be for another time between other places. The very good meal, of which the dish of resistance was served in "Cocottes en fontes" from various sources

http://www.autodejavel.fr/images/smilies/icon_lol.gifwas followed by the birthday cake as well as two other equally good offered by one of our friendly members on the occasion of his personal birthday. The meal was accompanied by interpretations of an excellent little Jazz Orchestra friends of our organizer. After this excellent evening, we all returned to our hotel late (2am for some) and enjoy a restful rest.

The Sunday morning was unfortunately tainted by the mechanical findings of bad augurs made by our president who despite a back pain carabine did not hesitate to endorse the coach mechanic for alas found that unfortunately there are unscrupulous "Margoulins" which sell very beautiful aesthetically pleasing vehicles but unable to take the road without endangering the lives of these occupants and that of other road users. The unfortunate "Avanti" ended her day on a plateau unable to resume the road, and our couple of friends forced to go home with a car loan.

By this very unfortunate incident, the rest of the day was very good, our cars were planned to be exhibited to the public on the place of the small village of Rochefort-en-Yvelines, and the public was very numerous to admire them. The lunch was excellent, and then we were surprised to see a miniature offered to us when he was very young at one of our friends present by Raymond Loewy himself (Invaluable gift if it is for one in love with the brand). Then it was time for farewell, for it was time for everyone to return. The last photo was taken in a small street of the village named "Rue Raymond Loewy" in honor of this great "Designer".

So a big thank you to Daniel for organizing this beautiful weekend, with a quality service, high-end choices, and an atmosphere that I'm not ready to forget. Good evening to all, I hope you are all well back, and look forward to seeing you again. Jean Louis

Great report! It looks like a wonderful turnout for a wonderful event. Lots of great Studebakers and a nice tribute to Raymond Loewy. Not everyone gets to have a street named after them.
