About to attempt once again to install the distributor, (car is outside and much more accessible), and forgot which way it rotates as I have to re-install the wires as well.

TIA

counterclockwise is correct but just rotate the engine with the cap off.

I just dropped a Delco into the 62GT a few nights ago, it took less than five minutes, and is still fresh in my mind: first move the wiring harness, that runs along the firewall seam, out of the way, or it will interfere with proper tilt of the distributor when trying to align it. Next use a long (18" or so) rod, about 3/8" thick, to find the small hole the shaft must pass through, then gently wag the rod back and forth, to get a mind's eye picture on the hole depth, location and angle. With that picture in mind, install the distributor, and use one hand down near the block to wag the distributor bottom gently, while "tapping" for the hole, with the distributor body, held in the other hand. It is possible to hit a false hole, that will go down a bit, then force the distributor to cock sideways a bit. Remove and try again; just keep tapping, and it will eventually drop into the correct hole.
